Windows 10 S will have Edge permanently set as your default browser

Yesterday, Microsoft announced Windows 10 S as an alternative OS primarily for upcoming budget PCs that are aimed at the education market. One of the changes from the Pro or Home version of Windows 10 is that 10 S will only let you install applications from the Windows Store.



This didn't sound all that bad at first but it is now slowly opening a fresh can of worms. For starters, you are limited to browsers that are available on the Store and for the time being, neither Chrome, Firefox, nor Opera are there. But then it gets worse.

Microsoft has decided that Edge will permanently be the default browser on Windows 10 S. This means that even if Google releases Chrome on the Store, Edge will still open by default every time you click on an HTML link. Secondly, Bing will permanently be your search engine on Edge, with no option to switch to Google or anything else.

Now, to be fair, Edge is actually a pretty solid browser and it's likely most budget PC buyers won't mind it too much (especially since it also runs better on low-end hardware than Chrome). However, forcing Bing as the default search engine is a bit too much, especially for students — who are the main target audience of these devices — who would be depending heavily on Google's alternative.

We will have to wait and see how this plays out for Microsoft and if the company changes its stance on the matter. Knowing Microsoft, it probably will.

Updated Google Contacts app makes it easier to get rid of duplicates

Google is pushing out an updated version of its contacts management app, bringing some of the features available in the web version to the Android app. The v 1.5 update reorganizes the user interface of Google Contacts. Instead of the two tabs – all and favorites – the app now just displays your entire contact list, with a sidebar menu available via the hamburger button on the left. Opening that up reveals a new section for managing duplicate contacts. That’s a feature that was present on the web app of Contacts , but the process was more convoluted on the Android app. You can now also add labels to your contacts, making it easy to organize large contact lists based on groups, for things like family, work, or school. LG showcases new rollable 65” OLED display

LG Display used CES 2018 in Las Vegas to officially unveil its new OLED displays - one of them being a 65-inch 4K flexible screen that can be rolled like a newspaper. The other is an 88” 8K OLED panel that we told you about last week. The flexibility of the 65” OLED display makes it easier to transport or store in the corner. Its small size allows for better space utilization, meaning you can take the TV anytime, anywhere and “enjoy bright, high-resolution content”. LG Display will also showcase its latest upgrades of the IPS technology.
