Samsung confirms Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will offer the Exynos 8 Octa, in select markets
Yesterday Samsung officially announced the
Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, further refining the design language first
introduced with the Galaxy S6 series. One thing Samsung wasn’t so clear on was
the processor inside the device. We were told that, depending on the market,
you’d either see a Qualcomm or Exynos chip, but that’s about as detailed as
Samsung got.
Later in the day, it was actually US Cellular
that first confirmed the US version would have a Snapdragon 820. But what about
the markets that are using the Exynos? Samsung has now formally announced the
Exynos 8 Octa, its 2nd generation premium mobile processor on 14nm FinFET
technology, is being utilized in the Exynos version of the Galaxy S7 and S7
Edge.
The
continuous adoption of our Exynos processors in flagship smartphone models like
the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge underscores our technology leadership in the mobile
SoC sector. Integrating custom-designed CPU cores for unrivalled performance
and incredibly fast LTE Cat. 12/13 modem, the new Exynos 8 Octa will bring the
most exciting mobile experience to Galaxy S7 users. – Ben K. Hur, Vice President of marketing,
System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics
Samsung claims the Exynos 8 Octa offers
improved performance by 30% and 10% better power efficiency when compared to
its predecessor, the Exynos Octa 7420. What that means when it comes to real
life use has yet to be seen just yet. It’s also hard to say which will prove to
be the better performer in the long run, the Snapdragon 820 or the Exynos 8.
